John Snaddon Thomson was born in Clackmannanshire in about 1897, the son of Alexander Thomson, a woolsorter, and his wife Elizabeth Birnie Thomson. In April 1914 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Alloa branch.

 

During the First World War Thomson left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He died on 29 April 1918 of wounds received in action on the Somme. He was 21 years old.

 

John Thomson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
