John Taylor was born in Greenock in 1898, the son of John Taylor. In July 1915, when he was 17, he went to work for The Royal Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Greenock West End branch. He later left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the King's Own Scottish Borderers. He died in Belgium on 18 August 1918. He was 20 years old.
John Taylor is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
