James Timmis was born on 1 August 1894, the son of Horatio and Rachel Timmis. In May 1911 he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Co as a junior at its Manchester Oxford Road branch. He transferred to the bank's Manchester head office in 1912, but returned to Oxford Road in 1913.
In January 1916 Timmis left the bank to go on military service, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He died on the Somme on 14 November 1916. He was 22 years old.
