Charles Milburn Thompson was born on 29 December 1897, the son of Charles Richards Thompson, a brewery agent, and his wife Barbara Ridley Thompson. He was educated at the North Eastern Counties School, Barnard Castle, and at Argyle House, Sunderland. In September 1914, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Hartlepool branch.

 

During the First World War Thompson left the bank to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 26 August 1917. He was 19 years old.
