Arthur Henry Thompson was born in Monk Bretton, Yorkshire, in 1894, the son of Samuel Thompson and his wife Fanny Elizabeth. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank.
During the First World War Thompson left his job at the bank's Doncaster Union Bank branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He was 22 years old.
Arthur Thompson is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
