William Stewart was born in Beith, Ayrshire, in 1875, the son of Andrew and Maggie Giffen Stewart. He was a solicitor and, from April 1908, joint agent of Commercial Bank of Scotland's Beith branch.
Stewart was a territorial soldier, and during the First World War left his work as a solicitor and bank agent to go on active service with his regiment. Major Stewart of the Royal Scots Fusiliers died on 12 July 1915 of wounds received in action in the Dardanelles. He was 39 years old.
William Stewart is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
