William Charles Stanford was born on 13 May 1893, the son of Charles and Mary Elizabeth Stanford. On his 17th birthday in 1910 he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In July 1915 Stanford left his job at the bank's Wokingham branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 31 July 1917. He was 24 years old.

 

William Stanford is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Bracknell branch.
