William Slate

William Charles Slate was born on 26 September 1881. In January 1901, when he was 19 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Slate became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
In May 1917 Slate left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Lombard Street branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Tank Corps. He died on 28 September 1918 of wounds received in action. He was 37 years old and left a widow, Beatrice, and four children under the age of 7.
William Slate is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
