Walter James Philip Spiro was born in Germany on 6 July 1892, the son of Siegmund and Jenny Spiro. The family emigrated to England when Walter was a young boy, settling initially in Liverpool, and later in London. In September 1909, when he was 17 years old, Spiro went to work for London County & Westminster Bank. He also joined the bank's staff sports club.

 

In September 1914 Spiro left his job as a clerk at the bank's Hungerford branch to join the army, becoming a Rifleman in the Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action in France on 18 August 1916. He was 24 years old.
