Sidney Stenning
Bank: London County & Westminster Bank
Place of work: Hertford branch
Died: 21 March 1918
Sidney Nelson Stenning, known as Nelson, was born on 13 November 1891, the son of Henry and Selina Stenning. In April 1909, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank at its Huntingdon branch. Later that year London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Stenning became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. He later transferred to the bank's Hertford branch.
Outside work Stenning was a member of his local rowing club, and was also a territorial soldier, serving in the Hertfordshire Yeomanry. At the outbreak of war in 1914 he was mobilised with his battalion, leaving the bank to go on active service. He served in the Dardanelles, and later in France.
By 1918 Stenning was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery. He died in France on 21 March 1918. He was 26 years old.
Sidney Stenning is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Hertford branch.
