Sidney John Elliot Spencer was born in Farnham, Surrey, in 1893, the son of John Elliot Spencer, a draper, and his wife Jessie Laura. From about 1913 he worked for Parr's Bank.

 

During the First World War Spencer left his job at the bank's London Threadneedle Street branch in London to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Somme on 28 February 1917. He was 23 years old.

 

Sidney Spencer is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest London Liverpool Street Station branch.
