Roy Smith was born on 10 March 1890, the son of Thomas Joel Smith and his wife Mary Ellen. In July 1907, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Smith became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank. He was also a member of the bank's staff sports club.

 

In September 1914 Smith left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Bromley branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 14 April 1917. He was 27 years old.
