Robert Cuthbert Stowell was born on 20 March 1888. In January 1906, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. The following year he was joined at the bank by his younger brother Wilfrid. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and both Stowell brothers became employees of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
In December 1915 Robert Stowell left his job as a clerk at the bank's Littlehampton branch to join the army, and by 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment), on active service in France. He died there on 20 November 1917. He was 29 years old. His brother Wilfrid was killed in action the following year.
Robert Stowell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Worthing South Street branch.
