Leslie Baynes Starling was born on 27 September 1898, the son of Charles and Augusta Starling. On his 17th birthday in 1915 he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In February 1917 Starling left his job as a clerk at the bank's Windsor branch to join the army, becoming a Signaller in the London Regiment. He died in France on 29 August 1918. He was 19 years old.

 

Leslie Starling is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Slough Trading Estate branch.
