James Herbert Stringfellow was born in Southport, Lancashire, on 31 July 1899, the son of John Stringfellow, a court bailiff, and his wife Nancy. From about 1915 he worked for Parr's Bank.
In August 1917, soon after his 18th birthday, Stringfellow left the bank to go on military service. By the following year he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force. He died on 22 July 1918 of wounds received in a flying accident in France. He was 18 years old.
