Harold Smith was born on 22 May 1896, the son of John Edward Smith, an estate agent, and his wife Mary. He was educated at Hull Grammar School. In March 1913, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England at its Hull branch. He was promoted to a clerkship there in April 1916.
During the First World War Smith left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action on the Somme on 4 October 1916. He was 20 years old.
