Harold John Silverwood was born in London on 3 January 1886, the son of William Bissill Silverwood and his wife Eleanor. In February 1904, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. He also joined the bank's staff sports club, where he was a prominent rower and hockey player. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Silverwood became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
In December 1915 Silverwood left his job at the bank's London Holland Park branch to join the army, initially as a Private in The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). He later transferred to the London Regiment.
In November 1918 Silverwood was training in Cambridge when he contracted influenza. He died of pneumonia on 11 November 1918, the day the armistice was signed. He was 32 years old.
