George Swan

George Richard Swan was born in Greenock in 1896, the son of Robert and Amy Swan. In October 1913 he went to work for Commercial Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Greenock West End branch.

 

During the First World War Swan left the bank to go on military service. By 1918 he was a Lieutenant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, on active service in France. He died there on 9 August 1918, of wounds received in action. He was 21 years old.

 

George Swan is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
