George Laurence Enoch Lotinga Smith was born in Nottingham on 20 September 1893, the son of George Henry Smith, a postal clerk, and his wife Laura Mary. In September 1910 he went to work for Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Banking Co.

During the First World War Smith left the bank to go on military service, and by 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Northumberland Fusiliers, on active service in Belgium. He died there on 19 July 1917. He was 23 years old.
