George Francis Shute was born in Shalfleet, Isle of Wight, in 1895, the son of the Reverend Charles C Shute and his wife Alice. In July 1913 he went to work for Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Banking Co.

During the First World War Shute left his job at the bank's Southwell branch to join the army. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Gloucestershire Regiment, on active service in France. He died there on 13 October 1917. He was 22 years old.
