Geoffrey Harold Smith was born on 23 May 1898, the son of Francis Smith, a clerk, and his wife Mary. On his 17th birthday in 1915 he went to work London County & Westminster Bank.

During the First World War Smith left his job at the bank's London head office to join the army, initially as a Private in the London Regiment. He was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Northamptonshire Regiment. He was posted to the Western Front in May 1917, and died there on 10 July 1917 of wounds received in action. He was 19 years old.
