Frederick Alexander Stewart was born on 3 October 1897, the son of Frank Stewart, a commercial traveller. In April 1914, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Bank of Scotland as an apprentice at its Kirkcaldy branch.
During the First World War Stewart left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action in France on 24 August 1918. He was 20 years old.
Frederick Stewart is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Gogarburn campus, Edinburgh.
