Frederick Alvin Sproston was born on 18 July 1896, the son of Charles Frederick Sproston and his wife Elizabeth Annie. In January 1913 he went to work for Manchester & County Bank.
In December 1915 Sproston left his job at the bank's Northwich branch to join the army, initially in the 26th (Bankers') Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was later commissioned into the Cheshire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Sproston was killed in action in France on 30 July 1918, not long after his 22nd birthday.
