Frank Shippobottom was born in Great Lever, Lancashire, in 1896, the son of William Hindley Shippobottom, a pawnbroker, and his wife Eleanor. He worked for Williams Deacon's Bank at its branches in Manchester Moss Side, Walkden, Farnworth and Bolton.
In January 1916 Shippobottom left his job at the bank's Bolton branch to go on military service. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, on active service in France. He died there on 20 November 1917, of wounds received in action. He was 21 years old.
Frank Shippobottom is commemorated on a bank war memorial at Hardman Boulevard office, Manchester.
