Edward Hamilton Southcomb was born on 20 June 1895. He was educated at Shrewsbury School. In October 1912, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Cheltenham branch. He was promoted to a clerkship there in October 1915.

 

In 1916 Southcomb left the bank to join the army, initially in the Gloucestershire Regiment. In November 1916 he was commissioned into the Manchester Regiment, and he was posted to France the following March.

 

Second Lieutenant Southcomb was killed in action on the Western Front on 31 July 1917. He was 22 years old.
