Edward William Smith was born in Ilford, Essex, on 7 June 1885, the son of Frank Smith, a corn merchant, and his wife Alice. In 1903, just before his 18th birthday, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Smith became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.
In September 1914 Smith left his job as a clerk at the bank's Bishop's Stortford branch to join the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Leading Seaman Smith was killed in action at Gallipoli on 4 June 1915, three days before his 30th birthday.
Edward Smith is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest Bishops Stortford branch.
