Charles Hartley Smith was born in Sheffield in 1894, the son of John Hartley Smith, a railway company agent, and his wife Sarah Ann. By 1911, when he was 16 years old, he was working for Sheffield Banking Co.
During the First World War Smith left his job as a clerk at the bank's Sheffield Hunter's Bar branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He died in France on 21 October 1916. He was 22 years old.
