Alfred Skinner was born in Sale, Cheshire, in 1891, the son of William Skinner, a bank manager, and his wife Margaret Ann. In about 1908 he followed his father into banking, taking a job with Parr's Bank.
During the First World War Simpson left his job at the bank's Widnes branch to go on military service. By 1916 he was a Captain in the Royal Flying Corps and the South Lancashire Regiment, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 31 August 1916. He was 25 years old.
