William Rowan was born on 9 January 1887. He worked for Union of London & Smiths Bank.

 

During the First World War Rowan left his job at the bank's London Princes Street office to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment). He was killed in action in Belgium on 26 September 1917. He was 30 years old and left a widow, Annie, whom he had married in 1913.

 

William Rowan is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
