Vivian Rees

Vivian Guest Rees was born on 24 October 1897, the son of William Rees, a foundry owner, and his wife Annie. He was educated in Llanelly, and in 1913 went to work for the South Wales & Liverpool Steamship Company.

 

In March 1915, when he was 17 years old, Rees took a job with National Provincial Bank of England at its Carmarthen branch. He was described in a staff report as being of 'excellent character, neat and accurate [and] a promising officer'.

 

In August 1916 Rees' older brother Ivor died of wounds received in action in France. The following month, Rees himself joined the army, initially in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and later in the Welsh Regiment.

 

Private Rees was on home service in England when he was taken ill in May 1918. He died of pneumonia in hospital in Middlesbrough on 10 May 1918. He was 20 years old.
