Thomas Rufus was born on 18 May 1890, the son of Frederick and Eliza Rufus. In May 1906, just after his 16th birthday, he went to work for Manchester & County Bank.

 

In November 1914 Rufus left his job at the bank's Stockport branch to join the army. He served in the Royal Fusiliers and was later commissioned into the Lancashire Fusiliers. By 1918 he held the rank of Captain. He was killed in action in France on 14 April 1918. He was 27 years old, and had been mentioned in despatches and awarded the Military Cross.
