Thomas Hugh Roper was born on 17 July 1896, the son of Ernest William Roper, who worked for P&O Steam Navigation Company, and his wife Helen Maude. He was educated at Bancroft School, Woodford Green. In December 1913, when he was 17 years old, Roper went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice in its head office security department in London.
In December 1915 Roper left the bank to join the army, becoming a Rifleman in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 16 May 1917. He was 20 years old.
Thomas Roper is commemorated on a bank war memorial held at NatWest Group Archives.
