Sydney Roberts was born on 26 June 1894, the son of general merchant. In April 1912, when he was 17, he began working for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Bargoed branch. He transferred to the bank's Port Talbot branch in March 1912 and later became a clerk there. A staff report noted that he 'gives his whole attention to his duties and appears anxious to do well'.
In January 1916 Roberts left the bank to join the army, becoming a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 8 February 1917. He was 22 years old.
