John Richard Roberts was born on 9 March 1898, the son of William Roberts and his wife Annie. In January 1915, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for Manchester & Liverpool District Banking Company.
In November 1916 Roberts left his job at the bank's Stone branch to join the army, becoming a Private in the Machine Gun Corps. He was killed in action in France on 4 April 1918. He was 20 years old.
