John Leslie Riches was born on 4 March 1896. In June 1913, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

In August 1914 Riches left his job as a clerk at the bank's London head office to join the army. By 1916 he was a Lance Corporal in the Royal Fusiliers, on active service in France. He was killed in action there on 15 July 1916. He was 20 years old.
