Henry Sizeland Rigg was born in Rawdon, Yorkshire, in around 1898, the son of John Leonard Rigg, a master butcher, and his wife Anna. He worked for Bradford District Bank in its head office foreign department.

During the First World War Rigg left his job at the bank to go on naval service as a Signalman in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. On 24 November 1917 the armed merchant ship in which he was serving, SS Dunrobin, was torpedoed and sunk by an enemy submarine off the Cornish coast whilst en route to the Tyne with a cargo of iron ore. Rigg was one of 31 men killed. He was 19 years old.
