Harry Russell was born at Llandaff, Glamorgan, in 1877, the son of Frank Russell, a schoolmaster, and his wife Mary Annie. While he was still an infant the family moved to Staffordshire. As a young man Russell followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a schoolmaster, but he later went to work for Union of London & Smiths Bank.
During the First World War Russell left his job at the bank's Bradford Union Bank branch to go on military service. By 1916 he was a Captain in the West Yorkshire Regiment, on active service in France. He died there on 10 June 1916. He was 38 years old and left a widow, Mabel.
Harry Russell is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
