Douglas Eric Robinson was born on 2 August 1894, the eldest son of Christopher Ridley Robinson, secretary to a wool spinning company, and his wife Ada. He was educated at Darlington Grammar School.
In November 1910, when he was 16 years old, Robinson went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Darlington branch. He was promoted to a clerkship in October 1913, and transferred to Newcastle upon Tyne branch in March 1914. A staff report while he was there called him 'a steady and accurate worker of good promise'.
In about April 1915 Robinson left the bank to join the Durham Light Infantry. Within a few weeks he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. He trained at Stockton and Darlington before being posted to the Western Front. He was killed in action on the Somme on 15 September 1916. He was 22 years old.
