Arthur Richard Russel was born in Brighton on 7 March 1895, the son of Thomas Clarkson Russel and his wife Elizabeth. In August 1913, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
At the outbreak of the First World War Russel left his job in the bank's London Lombard Street branch to go on military service. By the following year he was a Lieutenant in the Norfolk Regiment, on active service in Mesopotamia. He died there on Christmas Day 1915. He was 20 years old.
Arthur Russel is commemorated on a bank war memorial at NatWest City of London office.
