Walter Payne

Walter James Payne was born on 24 May 1889. In March 1907, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London & County Bank. In 1909 London & County Bank merged with London & Westminster Bank, and Payne became an employee of the enlarged London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In June 1916 Payne left his job as a clerk at the bank's London Hackney branch to join the army. Private Payne of The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) died on 25 September 1918 in a prisoner of war camp in Germany. He was 29 years old.
