Vio Douglas Wallace Pitt was born on 18 November 1891, the eldest son of Captain Thomas William Wallace Pitt and his wife Naomi Agnes. In September 1909, when he was 17 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.

 

In July 1915 Pitt left his job as a clerk at the bank's Rochester branch to join the Honourable Artillery Company. In August 1916 he was commissioned into the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Second Lieutenant Pitt died in France on 24 August 1916, of wounds received in action six days earlier. He was 24 years old.

Remembering Vio Douglas Wallace Pitt known as Doug. He wrote to his father that he wanted to command a platoon but was made Battalion intelligence officer and a few days later wounded on fatigue duties presumably by a shell as was in the second line and died a week later. Thank you for your supreme sacrifice. Your great nephew, James Pitt.
