Norman Frederick Purser was born on 30 October 1898, the son of Frederick Peete Purser, a bank clerk, and his wife May. In November 1914, when he was 16 years old, he followed his father into banking, going to work for London County & Westminster Bank as a junior at its London head office.
In November 1915, shortly after his 17th birthday, Purser volunteered for a territorial battalion of the London Regiment, but the following April he was discharged from the army on grounds of poor health. He later joined the Royal Flying Corps, where he became a commissioned officer.
Second Lieutenant Purser of the Royal Flying Corps died in France on 28 February 1918. He was 19 years old.
