John Robert Payne was born in 1884. He worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland in its London office.
During the First World War Payne left the bank to join the army. By 1917 he was a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery, on active service in France. He died there on 4 November 1917. He was 32 years old.
John Payne is commemorated on a bank war memorial at 36 St Andrew Square, Edinburgh.
