Harold Polkinghorne was born on 26 April 1890, the son of James Williams Polkinghorne, an insurance clerk, and his wife Alice May, a music teacher.

In September 1906, when Polkinghorne was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its London Mayfair branch. He completed his apprenticeship three years later, and in November 1909 moved to the bank's London head office as a clerk. He was a member of the bank's staff sports club.

During the First World War Polkinghorne joined the army, serving as a Private in the Royal Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 11 April 1917. He was 26 years old.
