Harold George Payne was born on 22 March 1892, the son of Joseph Payne and his wife Gulielma. In May 1910, when he was 18 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
During the First World War Payne left his job as a clerk at the bank's Redhill branch to join the army, becoming a Private in The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). He was killed on active service in Mesopotamia on 14 January 1916. He was 23 years old.
