Edgar Alan Parnell was born in Totnes on 13 May 1899. In about March 1916, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Dover branch.

During the First World War Parnell joined the Royal Flying Corps (later the Royal Air Force), obtaining his aviator's certificate in November 1917 and becoming a Second Lieutenant. Parnell died on 29 August 1918. He was 19 years old.
