Charles Walter Prettejohn was born in Stokenham, Devon, on 1 August 1887, the son of Nathaniel Prettejohn, a farmer, and his wife Annie. He was educated at Kingsbridge Grammar School.
In December 1904, when Prettejohn was 17 years old, he went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as an apprentice at its Plymouth branch. After completing his three-year apprenticeship he remained there as a clerk until August 1909, when he moved to Barnstaple branch. In December 1910 he moved to Tiverton branch. His manager there described him as 'straightforward and painstaking' and 'cheerful and willing worker', but complained about his poor handwriting.
During the First World War Prettejohn joined the army, serving as a Lance Corporal in the Devonshire Regiment. He died of disease in hospital in Mesopotamia on 10 July 1916. He was 28 years old.
