Charles Parrish was born in Halifax on 7 May 1897, the son of Willie Parrish, a miner, and his wife Amanda Matilda. In 1914 he went to work for Bradford District Bank in its foreign business department.
During the First World War Parrish served as an Ordinary Telegraphist in the navy. He died when the Thomas Stratten, a trawler on which he was serving, was struck by a German mine on 20 October 1917. He was 20 years old.
The bank's archives include a photograph of Parrish, annotated 'In loving memory of our dear boy Charles Parrish. Born May 7 1897. Lost at sea Oct 20th 1917. Just a ray of sunshine. From Mr & Mrs Parrish'.

In memory of Ordinary Telegraphist Charles Parrish of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who was killed by a mine explosion on the 20th October 1917. He was born at Shelf near Halifax on the 7th May 1897. He lived with his parents Willie (1867-1931) and Amanda Matilda (1869-1942) Parrish (née Atkinson) who were married in 1892. He had two siblings; Lily and Fred. In 1901 the family were living on Carr House Road and Willie was working as a stone miner. In 1911 the family were living at 75 Carr House Road in Shelf; Willie was a coal miner hewer and Lily was working as a worsted weaver. He was educated at Hipperholme Grammar School and prior to enlisting worked as a Junior Bank Clerk in the foreign business department of the Bradford District Bank (he joined in 1914). He was a member of the choir of St. Michael’s Church in Shelf. He is locally commemorated on the St. Michael’s Church War Memorial. He is also commemorated on the War Memorial Plaque at Hipperholme Grammar School.
