Arthur Blakeway Phillips was born in Hanwood, Shropshire, on 15 August 1883, the son of Richard Blakeway Phillips, a miller, and his wife Isabel Mary.
In August 1901, a week before his 18th birthday, Phillips went to work for National Provincial Bank of England as apprentice at its Leominster branch. He completed his apprenticeship three years later, and in April 1905 moved to Durham branch as a clerk. In May 1907 he was transferred to Leeds branch. In August 1910 National Provincial Bank of England opened a new branch in Huddersfield, and Phillips was appointed to the branch's founding staff.
During the First World War Phillips left his job at the bank to join the army, and in November 1915 he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in the London Regiment. He was killed in action in France on 19 June 1916. He was 32 years old.
