Walter Osborn was born in London on 2 October 1898, the son of Edwin Osborn, a schoolmaster, and his wife Rhoda. In October 1914, when he was 16 years old, he went to work for London County & Westminster Bank.
During the First World War Osborn left his job at the bank's London Woolwich branch to join the army. He was killed in action on 5 November 1918, when he was a Second Lieutenant in the London Regiment. He was 20 years old.
